Overview of the House Majority Policy Committee’s Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty Initiative

Today, nearly 12.5 percent of the state’s population live in poverty – equal to approximately 1.5 million residents. From urban and suburban settings to the state’s most rural communities, poverty continues to grip far too many Pennsylvania families.

With this notion in mind, the House Majority Policy Committee, under the direction of Chairman Reed (R-Indiana) launched its newest policy initiative entitled

Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty.

The initiative is designed to crisscross the state, studying the barriers in place for individuals and families attempting to reach self-sufficiency.  The committee plans to meet with various stakeholders on a regionalized, subject driven approach, learning the best and worst practices in combating poverty for Pennsylvanians.

Make sure to check out the initiative’s blog , which encompasses media clips related to the initiative, legislative members’ comments after policy events, and stakeholders’ positions on various policy suggestions.

To view a complete listing of events, tours, roundtables, and hearings on the initiative, please see the links below as well.
